The things that keep happening after you leave
Somebody cleans the office. Somebody empties the bins. There is a water supply, an electricity supply, probably a hygiene service, possibly a window cleaner, and at least one of those started so long ago that nobody currently in the building arranged it.
All of it is attached to an address rather than to you, and none of it stops because you moved.
The useful step is a list, made about a month out. Walk round and note every service that visibly happens. Then check the bank statements for the ones that do not leave a trace, because those are the ones that quietly keep running for a year.
Then decide, for each one
There are only three answers, and every service gets one.
- It comes with you. Fine, but the supplier needs telling, and some will treat a new address as a new arrangement rather than a change to an existing one.
- It stops. Also fine, and worth checking what notice is expected so it stops when you want rather than a month later.
- It stays with the building. Common with cleaning and bin collection, particularly in shared premises, in which case it is somebody else problem from the day you go.
The one that causes trouble is the fourth, unspoken answer: nobody decided, so it continues.
Meter readings are the small one that matters
Take them on the day you actually leave, not the day the paperwork says you left, and take them at the new address on the day you arrive.
Photograph them. It takes seconds and it settles any question later without a conversation.
If the new premises has been empty for a while, the reading at the start is the one that protects you from paying for whoever was there before.
Worth starting earlier than feels necessary
Most of these are quick individually and slow collectively, because each one is a phone call or a form and several of them will need a follow-up.
A month is comfortable. A fortnight is tight. The last week is how businesses end up paying for the cleaning of an office they no longer occupy.
None of this is our part of the job. It is simply the list that gets remembered last, and it is easier when it is written down early.
