A lot of moves here are decided by the school year
Stockport is somewhere families move to, and a great many of those moves are timed around a school place rather than a house.
That creates a pattern anybody who has moved in July will recognise. Offers land in spring, completions cluster in summer, and by the time the holidays arrive a large part of Greater Manchester is trying to move house in the same six weeks. August is the busiest month of the year for removals almost everywhere, and the last two weeks of it are the tightest of the lot.
None of that is a reason to move at a different time. It is a reason to book earlier than feels necessary.
If your move depends on the school year, get a date in the diary well before you feel ready. A quote holds for 14 days once you have one, and you can move a booking far more easily than you can conjure a slot in the third week of August. People who ring in July with a fixed deadline are the ones with the fewest options.
Moving in term time, if you have the choice
Not everybody has to move in the summer, and a term-time move is usually easier and cheaper.
Midweek is quieter than Friday and mid-month is quieter than month end, everywhere in the region. Term time is quieter than the holidays. If the sale allows it, a Tuesday in October is a completely different experience from the last Friday in August, and it usually costs less.
The trade-off is obvious: children are at school, which some parents find easier and others find impossible. There is no correct answer, only the one that suits your family. But it is worth knowing that the flexibility is worth money before you assume the summer is the only option.
Going from a flat to a house
The other common Stockport move is somebody leaving a Manchester flat for a house with actual rooms in it, and it works in the opposite direction from what people expect.
The problem is rarely too much furniture. It is too little. A one-bed flat’s contents disappear into a three-bed semi, and half the rooms sit empty while new furniture arrives over the following weeks on somebody else’s delivery schedule.
Two things make that easier. If new furniture is being delivered, try not to have it arriving on the same day you are moving, because two crews and a delivery van in one hallway helps nobody. And if you are moving in stages, tell us at quote stage. A smaller load moved once is straightforward. A smaller load moved three times is not.
If you are keeping things from the flat that will not have a home for a while, storage is often cheaper than paying to move them twice.
