Wardrobes that went up in the room, sofas that came in before a doorway was changed, and things that were assembled where they stand. Some of it comes apart, some of it needs a different route out.
Decisions take longer
Sorting what goes and what does not is not a one-evening job when it covers decades, and it is far easier before the day than during it.
It is not only a logistical exercise
Leaving a house you have lived in for a very long time is a bigger thing than the boxes suggest. It is worth giving yourself more time than the move technically needs.
The one thing that helps most
Start in the loft.
It sounds like the least urgent job and it is almost always the one that determines whether the day runs to plan. Lofts hold far more than anyone remembers, they are slow to empty, and nothing about their contents can be estimated from below.
Have a proper look before we quote. It is the single biggest source of the gap between an estimate and a moving day, and it is easily avoided.
The same is true, on a smaller scale, of garages, sheds and anywhere a decade of things has quietly accumulated.

Storage buys you time, and it is normally cheaper than making a rushed decision or paying to move something twice. Mention it at quote stage.
Some of the furniture has not moved since it arrived. Is that a problem?
It is common and worth flagging early. Tell us about anything large when you book so it is planned for rather than found on the day.

Can we do it over more than one day?
Yes, and after a long tenure it is often the calmer option. Tell us at quote stage so it is priced as one job.
How much notice do you need?
Thirty days or more where possible, and more if there is a lot of sorting to do first. Your price is held for 14 days while dates settle.
