Moving after a long time in the same house

Plenty of moves around here are not somebody’s third in five years. They are the first in twenty, or thirty, or longer.

That is a different job, and it is worth saying so, because most removals advice is written for people who move often and have it down to a routine.

The practical differences are real:

Volume

There is more, and it is in places nobody has looked

Lofts, under the stairs, the back of the garage, a wardrobe that has not been fully emptied since it was carried in. Volume estimates go wrong on long-tenure moves more than any other kind.

Furniture

It has not moved in years

Wardrobes that went up in the room, sofas that came in before a doorway was changed, and things that were assembled where they stand. Some of it comes apart, some of it needs a different route out.

Sorting

Decisions take longer

Sorting what goes and what does not is not a one-evening job when it covers decades, and it is far easier before the day than during it.

Time

It is not only a logistical exercise

Leaving a house you have lived in for a very long time is a bigger thing than the boxes suggest. It is worth giving yourself more time than the move technically needs.

The one thing that helps most

Start in the loft.

It sounds like the least urgent job and it is almost always the one that determines whether the day runs to plan. Lofts hold far more than anyone remembers, they are slow to empty, and nothing about their contents can be estimated from below.

Have a proper look before we quote. It is the single biggest source of the gap between an estimate and a moving day, and it is easily avoided.

The same is true, on a smaller scale, of garages, sheds and anywhere a decade of things has quietly accumulated.

When the usual options do not quite fit

Most moves fit one of our standard services, and after a long time in one house that is often a fuller one than people first assume.

Some jobs need something else. Part of it going now and the rest later. Some of it into storage while decisions get made. Two destinations.

Say so and we will tell you what can be arranged. It is easier to build the job around the situation than to force the situation into a fixed shape.

The quickest route is the form. Give us the outline, we will call you.

Anything you would rather not do yourself

  • Packing, all of it or just the kitchen and the breakables
  • Furniture taken apart and rebuilt
  • Appliances disconnected and reconnected
  • Lofts, garages and sheds, provided we know they are part of the job
  • Storage, when decisions are not made yet or the dates do not meet
  • Parking, if the street needs a permit for the van. We arrange it

Mention any of it at the first conversation and it goes in the quote rather than onto the invoice.

Where we cover

Leigh sits about eleven miles west of Manchester and six south east of Wigan, a cotton and coal town with terraced streets packed around its centre and the Bridgewater Canal running past the old mills.

Questions people ask

The loft, earlier than feels necessary. It holds more than anyone expects and it is the usual reason a quote and a moving day disagree.

Storage buys you time, and it is normally cheaper than making a rushed decision or paying to move something twice. Mention it at quote stage.

It is common and worth flagging early. Tell us about anything large when you book so it is planned for rather than found on the day.

Yes, along with Astley, Lowton and the villages around them.

Yes, and after a long tenure it is often the calmer option. Tell us at quote stage so it is priced as one job.

Thirty days or more where possible, and more if there is a lot of sorting to do first. Your price is held for 14 days while dates settle.
