Altrincham, Hale, Bowdon and Timperley sit at the southern edge of Trafford. People arriving here often go into rented accommodation first while they look for something to buy, which means two moves within a year, and those are worth planning as a pair rather than as two unrelated bookings. This guide covers which council you are dealing with, the dates that matter if you have children, getting around, and what Trafford Council asks for when a removal vehicle needs to park.
For the move itself, including how we price the bigger period houses, see our removals in Altrincham.
Which council covers Altrincham?
Trafford Council covers Altrincham, Hale, Hale Barns, Bowdon and Timperley, along with Sale, Urmston, Stretford and Old Trafford further north. That matters on moving day, because the council decides where the removal vehicle may stop, and afterwards, because it runs school admissions.
If you are moving from Manchester, Stockport or Cheshire, the address you are leaving may be under a different council with different rules. Two addresses usually mean two sets of paperwork.
The areas, briefly
Altrincham packs an unusual range of housing into a small area. Within a couple of miles you go from Victorian villas on the Devisdale to modern detached houses in Hale Barns, semis in Timperley and terraces in Broadheath.
- Bowdon: substantial Victorian and Edwardian villas, much of it within a conservation area.
- Hale and Hale Barns: large detached houses, mature gardens, and a good number of gated or gravel drives.
- Timperley: inter-war and post-war semis with driveways.
- Broadheath and Oldfield Brow: terraces and smaller semis, with street parking rather than driveways.
- The town centre: apartments and flats above the shops around Stamford New Road and Ashley Road, with controlled parking, a busy market and the Metrolink in the same few streets.
If you are buying a period house, Trafford Council publishes conservation area guidance, including for The Downs and South Hale. It is worth reading before you plan any changes to the outside of the house.
Schools: the entrance test comes first
If a grammar school place matters to you, the school timetable can matter more than your completion date. Trafford Council’s admissions pages say:
- you must pass the entrance test for a grammar school before you can be considered for a place there;
- you register for the test with the school directly, not with the council;
- five of the borough’s seven grammar schools, including Altrincham Grammar School for Boys and Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, are in the Trafford Consortium and share one test. For September 2027 entry, that test was on 14 September 2026;
- Loreto Grammar School and St Ambrose College set a different test, which was held on 18 September 2026 for September 2027 entry.
So if you are moving in with a child who will start secondary school in the next year or two, speak to the schools you are considering before you fix a moving date, and check the council’s admissions pages for the current year.
Getting around
Altrincham is on the Metrolink, and TfGM lists two tram routes from it: Altrincham to Bury and Altrincham to Etihad Campus. Navigation Road and Timperley have tram stops of their own on the way into the city.
On moving day, the town centre is the part that needs most planning. Controlled parking, the market and the trams share the same few streets, so tell us if either address is around Stamford New Road or Ashley Road.
Parking the removal vehicle: Trafford’s rules
If the vehicle can use your drive or a legal space outside, you need nothing from the council. If it has to stop where it normally could not, Trafford Council offers a parking dispensation. As published on 31 October 2026:
- When it is allowed: dispensation “will only be considered where it is essential for the vehicle to be at the location”. House removals are one of the reasons the council considers, with building works, weddings and filming.
- Cost: £18.50 per day, per vehicle. A move with two vehicles needs a dispensation for each.
- Notice: at least 3 days, so the council can check the location is viable and meets health and safety requirements.
- How to apply: complete the council’s parking dispensation application form and email it to parking@trafford.gov.uk (a payment link follows if it is approved), or post it to Parking Services at Trafford Town Hall with payment.
Three days is the minimum, not a target. Apply once your date is firm, and check the council’s dispensation page for the current fee before you do.
The application asks why the vehicle needs to be at that spot, so give as much detail as you can. We can provide the vehicle registration, dimensions and realistic timings an application needs, and tell you how many bays the job actually requires, which is usually two and occasionally three.
Gates, gravel and long drives
Many Hale and Bowdon moves never touch the street, but the drive brings its own questions. Gravel behaves differently after heavy rain, gates need to stay open rather than close behind a vehicle, and it helps to know whether there is room to turn inside or whether the vehicle reverses out. Tell us at the quote stage.
For some of the larger houses, two days is the better answer than one. We will say so when we quote rather than discover it late in the afternoon.
When to book
Four to six weeks is enough for most moves. Allow longer for a large house or a date in July or August, and earlier again if the house needs a visit before we can price it. If completion and your new keys do not line up, storage in Manchester covers the gap.
Getting a quote
Send us both addresses, a description of the property, anything you already know is awkward, and your date. You will have a figure in writing, usually within the working day. Call 0161 768 2056, or see our removals in Altrincham and piano moving if there is an upright or a grand coming with you.

Only if it has to stop somewhere it normally could not. Trafford Council’s parking dispensation costs £18.50 per day, per vehicle (31 October 2026), needs at least 3 days’ notice, and house removals are one of the reasons it considers.
